 Kumdo terminology

The following is a glossary of terms related to kumdo.  Where possible, I have provided the Hangul and hanja for them. 

 

Equipment

Bamboo sword: Jukdo 죽도, hanja 竹刀

Wooden sword: Mokdo 목도, 木刀 or mokkum

Sword: Do , hanja

Armor: Hogu 호구, hanja 護具

Uniform jacket: Dobok sang-ui

Uniform pants: Dobok ha-ui

Head protector: Ho-myun

Gloves: Ho-wan

Body protector: Kap

Waist protector: Kap-sang

Head towel: Myun-su-gon

Waist emblem: -

 

Parts of the Jukdo

Hand guard: Ko-deung-yi

Guard stopper: Ko-deung-yi-ba-chim

Hilt: Kal-ja-roo

Hilt leather: Byung hyuk

Cord/string: Deung jool

Leather strap: Joon hyuk

Leather tip: Sun hyuk

First 1/3 of sword: Kyuk ja boo

 

Targets

Head strike: Meori

Side of head strike: Yeop meori

Left / right head strike: Wu / jwa meori

Wrist strike: Sohn mok

Waist strike: Heori

Thrust to throat: Mok

 

Titles

Headmaster: Kwanjangnim

Master: Sabumnim

Teacher: Kyosanim / sunsengnim

Dan grade student: Yudansja 有段者

Geub grade student: Mudanja 無段者

Senior (to you): Sang geup ja

Junior (to you): Ha geup ja

Student of kumdo: Soo ryun sang

Referee: Joo sim

Judge: Bu sim

Time keeper: Kae sim

Score keeper: Ki rohk

Attacker in kata: Kong keok ja

Receiver in kata: Bang uh ja

Receiver in drills: Sang seok

Call to attention: Ju mok / Charyot

Standing bow: Sang ho gan e ye I

Sit down: An ja

Bow to front: jeon bang e ye I

Bow to each other: Sang ho gan e ye I

Bow to master: Sun seng nim ge ye I

Meditation: Mooksang

All rise: Mo du il eo seo

Kneeling attention: jung jwa

Kneeling bow: Jeol

Thank you: Gam sa ham ni da

Yes: Ye

No: A neo

Sword in left hand: Charyeo do

Sword in left hand at hip: Heori do

Draw the sword: Pobah do

Sheath the sword: Kochah do

Break (at ease) position: Shi-u do

Ease kamae: Pul o do
